Coffee Brewing Tips

1. Only use fresh cold water. If you don’t like the taste of your water don’t use it in your coffee. It does affect the taste.

2. Make sure your coffee maker is clean. Stale coffee oils and sediments will add bitter flavor to your coffee.

3. The water temperature should be between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. Water too hot gives a scalded bitter taste. Water too cold makes the coffee appear weak.

4. The Reading Coffee Roasters only sells Arabica coffee. Arabica beans are the highest quality beans available. They are grown in high altitudes resulting in a more flavorful coffee.

5. Choose the correct grind for your coffee. Grinding the beans just before brewing it increases the exquisite flavor and gives off a wonderful aroma. Check the brewer manufacturer’s instructions for which grind is best. Drip brewer requires a finer grind. French press needs a coarse grind and generally yields the richest cup of coffee.

6. The amount of coffee used in brewing depends on personal taste. However, the industry standard is one tablespoon of coffee per six ounces of water.

7. Adding such things as cream, sugar and other flavors can help enhance your coffee experience. But sometimes the reason all this is added is to mask inferior quality coffee. Coffee aficionados consider freshly roasted and brewed coffee to be sweet by itself.

8. Now it’s time to enjoy. Serve immediately to retain the distinctive qualities and freshness of the coffee.
